The Tower of London – At Night!
It’s not every day you get to have a tour of the Tower of London, under the stars from the Chief Yeoman Warder, but the Twilight Tours allows you to do just this. Wrapping up warm, we joined Alan to hear the gory, ghostly and glorious details that have taken place in this bastion of British history over the centuries.
Stories ranged from the resident polar bear, which was given to Henry VIII as a gift, who fished in the Thames, the role that Traitor’s Gate played when Anne Boleyn arrived at the Tower for the last time, and the ghosts who supposedly stalk some of the rooms. An excellent evening activity for both children and adults, it is atmospheric and entertaining and well worth a trip. Remember that it’s for over 12’s only, and you must book! It’s so popular and the tours fill up fast.
After your tour, refuel at the nearby Gourmet Burger Kitchen, just around the corner in Tower Place. We tucked into the enormous (and delicious!) Kiwi burger and the Habanero burger, super skinny fries and a range of interesting condiments like basil mayonnaise. Over Christmas, kids will love the mince pie milkshake and Christmas turkey burger, both of which are well priced, and provide the perfect end to an exciting family evening out in London.
Give the evening a grown up twist…
This evening would also make a great date! Scare yourself silly at The Tower of London, then head to Vivat Bacchus, a great spot for wine lovers. The wine list has plenty of exciting wines to taste from both New and Old World wineries. Just over the bridge, in the historic Hays Galleria arcade, this minimalist bar has an extensive wine cellar and a cheese room – what better place for a romantic nightcap.
Ed and Olivia checked out this date on December evening: “ We had an amazing time, but remember to wrap up warm, it’s freezing at The Tower of London!”.
The Tower of London is in East London, so an easy trip from hotels in Canary Wharf, you can even travel by river taxi! Just ask the concierge to help you book. For more details on the Tower of London, contact www.hrp.org.uk
